The purpose of the job is to plan and carry out experimental programs in support of developing an improved fundamental understanding of the behavior of Flow Control refractory products in contact with molten steel and steelmaking oxides. The fundamental understanding will be applied to the development of new testing protocols and the generation of new ideas for methods to improve the resistance to failure of refractory products in a diversity of applications. The expectation is that the development of new technologies will be built upon the simulation of wear mechanisms, and these will be used to develop new products and grow the Flow Control business globally.
Direct Reports :
One to two Lab or Research Technicians will directly report to this position depending on project loading.
Dimensions of Position :
The position will lead or support 2-3 projects globally, influencing value of new products sold each year and supporting existing Flow Control sales.
Key Result Areas :
Ph.D Degree in Materials Science & Engineering or a related field with a speciality in high temperature interactions and phase analysis
4-6 years research experience in degreed field. 2-3 years hands on experience with thermodynamic modelling and simulation of material systems. 2-3 years hands on experience with thermochemical analysis, testing and microscopy. Direct experience with steelmaking applications and experience designing new equipment and/or test methods are also desirable.
The following knowledges bases are required: Significant knowledge of materials based thermodynamic relationships. Knowledge of microscopy and phase analysis techniques. Knowledge of thermodynamic simulation principles and theory. Proficiency in FactSage.
Skills & Behaviour :
Ability to work with others in a shared lab or crowded environment. Good communications skills.
Problem Solving & Complexity :
The position will require the job holder to creatively solve problems and develop new solutions. Problem solving will require a very diverse acquired knowledge base including strong understanding of steelmaking, thermodynamics and materials science. Decisions referred to manager would include how to best present information to the requestors and determining overall project priority.
