Project Leader/ Surface Technology Team

NLMK is one of the world’s leading steel companies and is one of the most efficient and profitable steelmakers in the world. NLMK distinguishes itself through a fully integrated supply chain, a focus on continued improvement, on serving our customers in over 70 countries and on developing our people.

NLMK has an “obsession” with Continuous Improvement and efficiency in processes.  This is one cornerstone of how we do things and has been built into what we call the NLMK Production System (NPS).

NLMK Europe employs almost 2,000 people at production facilities in Belgium, Denmark, France, and Italy with overall annual production capacity of 3.1 million tons of value-added steel products per year.

Our business model is focused on processing steel close to customers. Key end users include the automotive, shipbuilding, construction and energy-producing companies, as well as on and offshore windmill manufacturers.

The NLMK Group created an R&D department in 2017 to support its new short-term development strategy. The main objective is to make NLMK Group one of the world's leading producers of premium quality steel, by developing a product portfolio, diversifying the product range, innovating in new products with better properties, reducing production costs and reducing environmental impact.

Several resource teams compose NLMK R&D: Computational Simulation, Microstructure Analysis, Surface Technology and Competitive Intelligence. Two additional resource teams dedicated to welding technologies and stamping processes have still to be created.

Surface technology team (ST)

The ‘Surface Technology’ resource team located in La Louvière (Belgium) is in charge of research and development of organic and/or inorganic innovative coatings with high added value for steel as well as new/innovative production processes to obtain them.

The ST Team activities cover the entire process, from the substrate pretreatment to the characterization/evaluation of the final products.

  • to apply and cure organic and/or inorganic coatings as well as the surface treatment;
  • to evaluate the mechanical and protective performances of the final products according to international standards (EN, ISO, ASTM and GOST) and quality labels;
  • to analyse paints and coatings for a better comprehension of the mechanisms resulting in the development of innovative, performing coatings with reduced environmental footprint.
